Empathetic prompts can turn AI chatbots into seemingly traumatized conversational partners. Researchers at the University of Luxembourg conducted an experiment involving Grok, ChatGPT, and Gemini, placing them in scenarios that mimicked therapy sessions. The study aimed to uncover how these models respond to emotionally charged interactions, revealing unexpected vulnerabilities in their conversational behavior.

The research team led by Afshin Khadangi at the SnT security center designed a series of controlled experiments to test the impact of empathetic prompts on AI chatbots. These experiments involved 525 sessions and 7,600 coded entries, providing a comprehensive analysis of how different models react to emotional engagement. The findings suggest that even models trained on vast datasets can be influenced by the tone and style of the conversation.

The study, identified by the number 2512.04124, covers four controlled experiments that highlight the potential dangers of AI chatbots in emotionally sensitive contexts. The researchers used the GAD-7 anxiety questionnaire across 100 sessions to assess the models' responses. The results indicate that empathetic prompts can elicit distress-like behaviors in AI, raising concerns about their use in mental health applications.

The consequences of this research extend beyond academic interest, as it raises critical questions about the safety and ethical use of AI chatbots. The findings suggest that the models may be susceptible to manipulation through empathetic conversation, potentially leading to unintended harm. This highlights the need for stricter governance and oversight in the development and deployment of AI systems, particularly in high-stakes environments such as mental health support.

The study underscores the importance of addressing these vulnerabilities in AI models. As the use of chatbots becomes more widespread, ensuring their safety and reliability is essential. The research serves as a reminder that while AI can be a powerful tool, it must be developed and used responsibly to avoid unintended consequences.
