Smartphone cameras are evolving beyond memory capture, says OPPO's Goldee Patnaik
OPPO India's Goldee Patnaik highlights how smartphone cameras are adapting to new uses, including AI-assisted editing and content creation. The shift reflects growing demand for advanced imaging features in India.

Smartphone cameras are no longer just tools for capturing memories; they are evolving into essential devices for content creation and communication. OPPO India's Goldee Patnaik explains how the company is adapting its camera technology to meet the changing needs of users. This includes features like wider selfies, AI-assisted editing, and enhanced video capabilities that cater to the growing demand for high-quality content creation.
The evolution of smartphone cameras is driven by the increasing role of social media and the need for users to produce and share content seamlessly. Goldee Patnaik notes that smartphones are now central to how people document their lives, work, and interact with others. This shift is particularly evident in India, where smartphone usage for content creation is on the rise.
According to a 2026 study by the Indian School of Business (ISB) and HashFame, Hindi-language creators accounted for 42% of India's creator base in 2025. This highlights the growing influence of regional languages in content creation and the need for smartphone cameras to support diverse user preferences. The study also indicates that non-Hindi creators make up the remaining 58% of the creator base.
In India, the rise of content creation has led to increased demand for smartphones with advanced camera features. This trend is supported by the growing number of monetised content creators, with BCG estimating that India has over 2–2.5 million such creators who influence $350–400 billion in consumer spending. This figure is projected to exceed $1 trillion by 2030, underscoring the economic significance of content creation in the country.
As smartphone cameras continue to evolve, companies like OPPO are investing in technologies that cater to the needs of content creators. This includes AI-assisted editing tools, improved video resolution, and features that support multi-language content creation. These advancements are expected to further drive the growth of the content creation industry in India and beyond.
