China's open-weight AI models are now just 4 months behind frontier US offerings, Mozilla report claims

Mozilla’s latest report, published on Sept. 15, reveals that China’s open-weight AI models are now only 4 months behind the leading US models. This marks a significant reduction in the performance gap compared to earlier assessments. The findings are based on data current to Sept. 1 and include insights from various open-source and commercial models.

The report notes that while Chinese models still lag in some benchmarks, they offer a much lower cost of use. This cost advantage is particularly evident when comparing open models to their closed counterparts. For instance, one open model performed at 60% of the price of a leading closed model while trailing by only three points on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index.
