China is rapidly advancing its capabilities in AI-driven weather forecasting, positioning itself as a key player in the global race to improve meteorological predictions. Chinese researchers have developed several AI forecasting models, including Fengwu from the Shanghai AI Laboratory, Huawei's Pangu, and Fudan University's Fuxi. These systems are being evaluated for their ability to generate forecasts that outperform existing models. The integration of AI into weather prediction is part of a broader push to enhance the accuracy and lead time of forecasts, which is crucial for managing the impacts of extreme weather.

Fengwu, in particular, has demonstrated significant improvements over existing models. Developers reported that it outperformed GraphCast across approximately 80% of evaluated weather variables. Additionally, Fengwu extended the range of skilful global medium-range forecasts to 10 days, a substantial increase from previous capabilities. These advancements are being highlighted as a response to the growing need for reliable weather information in the face of increasing extreme weather events.

The deployment of AI in weather forecasting carries implications for cost, governance, and vendor lock-in. As AI models become more integrated into national and local decision-making processes, questions arise about data ownership, model transparency, and the reliance on proprietary systems. Market reactions suggest that the technology is gaining traction, but its long-term sustainability will depend on addressing these governance and operational challenges.
