AI agents use roughly 600 times more energy than a simple chat prompt, according to a new analysis by climate scientist Zeke Hausfather. This finding challenges earlier estimates from companies like Google and OpenAI, which suggested lower energy consumption for AI interactions.

Hausfather's research involved tracking the use of the programming agent Claude Code over eight weeks. During this period, approximately 1,100 inputs generated over 14,000 model calls and 3.2 billion tokens, consuming about 170 kilowatt-hours of electricity. This equates to roughly 150 watt-hours per input, far exceeding the energy used for simple chat prompts.

The energy discrepancy is stark. While a simple chat prompt may use minimal power, AI agents require extensive computational resources. This includes processing large volumes of data and performing complex tasks, which significantly increases energy consumption. The findings underscore the need for more transparent reporting on AI energy usage.

The increased energy consumption has broader implications for cost, vendor lock-in, and governance. As AI systems become more complex, the financial and environmental costs rise, potentially affecting adoption and regulatory oversight. Market players may need to address these concerns to maintain user trust and compliance.
